In Loving Memory of Bryan p. LaPlante and Michael J. Booth
With heavy hearts and profound sorrow, we remember and honor the lives of Bryan P. LaPlante and Michael J. Booth, whose lives were tragically lost on the evening of January 18, 2026, during a heartbreaking incident on Chaumont Pond in the town of Clifton, New York.
That winter evening began like so many others—quiet, familiar, and rooted in the simple joy of spending time outdoors. Ice fishing is more than a pastime in northern communities; it is a tradition, a moment of peace, and a way to connect with nature and with one another. Bryan, Michael, and a young child set out together that day, unaware that the night would end in unimaginable tragedy.
When concerns arose that the group had not returned, Patrick R. LaPlante, driven by love and responsibility, went searching along the shoreline. In an act that speaks volumes about the strength of family bonds and selflessness, Patrick attempted to help Bryan after finding him in distress. Though Patrick himself fell through the ice during this brave effort, he managed to pull himself to safety and later sought help. His actions reflect a courage that will never be forgotten.
Despite the swift response of law enforcement, fire, and rescue crews—who worked tirelessly and with unwavering dedication—Bryan LaPlante and Michael Booth were found unresponsive in the water. Every possible effort was made to save them, but both men were later pronounced deceased at the hospital.
Bryan P. LaPlante, 33, of Newton Falls, will be remembered for the life he lived and the love he shared with those around him. His presence left a mark on family and friends who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.
Michael J. Booth, 48, of Oswegatchie, was a valued member of his community, remembered for his spirit, his kindness, and the connections he built with those who knew him.
This tragedy has touched countless lives—family members, friends, first responders, and an entire community now united in grief. It is also a reminder of the unpredictable power of nature and the importance of safety, vigilance, and care for one another, especially during winter months.
As we mourn Bryan and Michael, we also hold close the strength of those who survived and the bravery of the responders who answered the call that night. May the memories of Bryan LaPlante and Michael Booth live on through the stories shared, the love remembered, and the lives they touched.
Rest in peace. You are gone, but you will never be forgotten.
