Rev. John Edward Criss Obituary: A Beloved Servant called Home at 62
Rev. John Edward Criss Obituary: It is a profound moment of both sadness and peace as we remember Reverend John Edward Criss, who, in God’s perfect timing, was called home to Heaven on August 21, 2025, at the age of 62. While our hearts ache at his passing, we rejoice knowing that he is now in the presence of the Lord he served so faithfully.
Born on September 1, 1962, in Canton, Ohio, John was the tenth child of Reverend Edgar Calvin and Geneva Criss. Even as a young boy, it was clear that God had placed a special calling on his life. At just fourteen years old, he answered that call, stepping into ministry with a heart full of passion for the gospel.
For the next forty-four years, John gave his life to preaching, pastoring, evangelizing, and planting churches. His ministry was built on integrity, honesty, and a deep love for the Word of God. He never sought recognition—only to bring people closer to Christ.
John wasn’t only a preacher. He was a dreamer, a craftsman, a musician, and an artist. He used his skills as a professional painter and builder to help establish and beautify places of worship. With music and creativity, he brought joy and inspiration to every community he touched.
But those who knew him best will tell you that his greatest gift wasn’t in his talents—it was in his presence. He was the kind of man who could light up a room with a story, a joke, or a simple word of encouragement. Whether over a cup of coffee or a lively debate, John made people feel seen, heard, and valued.
At the center of John’s life was his family. He shared 38 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Pamela, who stood faithfully by his side through every season of life. Together they raised two children, Nichole (Tyler) Sullivan and Jacob Criss, who were his pride and joy.
John also leaves behind a large and loving family—siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws—each of whom knew the strength of his love and the steadiness of his faith. Though he has now reunited in Heaven with his parents and his sisters Karen Kirby and Joyce Stevenson, his memory will live on through those who loved him here on earth.
The family invites friends and loved ones to gather and celebrate John’s life:
Visitation: Thursday, August 28, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Paquelet Funeral Home.
Celebration of Life: Thursday, August 28, 2025, at 6 p.m. at New Life Massillon, with calling hours beginning at 5 p.m.
These services will be a time not only to grieve but to remember the joy, laughter, and love John shared so freely.
John often quoted the words of Scripture: “Well done, good and faithful servant: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.” Today, we believe those words have been spoken over him as he enters into his eternal reward.
Though we will miss his stories, his laughter, and his presence, we hold tightly to the hope that we will see him again. His life was a living testimony of what it means to love God, love people, and walk humbly in faith.
Reverend John Edward Criss will be remembered as a devoted husband, a loving father, a loyal friend, and a faithful servant of God. His legacy of faith and kindness will continue to inspire all who knew him.
While our hearts are heavy, we take comfort in knowing that his journey continues—not here, but in the joy of the Lord’s presence. And until that day when we meet again, we will carry his memory with love.
