In Loving Memory of Gene Bartnes and His Son Koltyn: Cherished Always, Forever Missed
With heavy hearts and profound sorrow, we come together to remember and honor the lives of Gene Russell Bartnes and his beloved 3‑year‑old son, Koltyn Wayne Bartnes, whose tragic passing on March 30, 2026, has left an unimaginable void in the hearts of their family, friends, and the entire Becker County community near Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.
The Becker County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call Monday afternoon after a family member became concerned when Gene did not show up for work. Upon arriving at the Holmesville Township residence, deputies discovered both Gene and young Koltyn had died from apparent gunshot wounds. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office later ruled Koltyn’s death a homicide and Gene’s death a suicide.
Gene was a father whose love and devotion to his young son defined the core of his life. A respected member of his community, he was known for his quiet strength, his care for others, and the meaningful relationships he built with family and friends. Koltyn—full of life, laughter, and youthful wonder—was cherished deeply by all who knew him. Together, they were a beloved presence in their community and an integral part of countless shared memories now held close by those who loved them most.
The suddenness of their loss is deeply felt by the Becker County community and all who were touched by their lives. Gene’s kindness, dedication, and strength, and Koltyn’s bright spirit and innocence, are now legacies that will be forever remembered.
To their family and friends: no words can ease the depth of your grief, but may you find comfort in the love, memories, and bond you shared with Gene and Koltyn. May their spirits rest in peace, and may their memories continue to shine in the hearts of all who knew them.
Gone too soon, but never forgotten.
