In Loving Memory of Juan “Wan Wan”
There are moments in life that leave an ache so deep, words struggle to carry the weight of what we feel. Today, we come together in grief, in love, and in remembrance of Juan — lovingly known as Wan Wan — a bright and beautiful 13-year-old whose life was taken far too soon in a heartbreaking tragedy.
What should have been a joyful and uplifting day at a track meet at STEAM Academy McCluer South-Berkeley High School became a moment forever etched in sorrow. A place once filled with laughter, excitement, and school pride was suddenly overcome by fear, confusion, and heartbreak. Families who gathered to cheer on their children found themselves clinging to one another in disbelief. Students who came to run, compete, and celebrate were left shaken, their innocence forever changed.
And at the center of this tragedy was Juan — a child full of life, full of promise, and full of light.
Juan was more than just a student. He was a son deeply loved, a friend deeply cherished, and a classmate whose presence brought joy to those around him. Known affectionately as “Wan Wan,” he carried a spirit that was warm, vibrant, and unforgettable. Whether through his smile, his laughter, or the simple way he showed kindness to others, Juan had a way of making people feel seen and valued.
At just 13 years old, his journey had only begun. He had dreams yet to chase, talents yet to discover, and a future filled with endless possibilities. His life, though tragically brief, was meaningful in ways that words can barely capture. The love he gave, the joy he shared, and the memories he created will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew him.
This tragedy has shaken an entire community to its core. With students and families from over 20 schools present, the ripple effect of this loss stretches far and wide. Another young life continues to fight for survival, and countless others are left trying to process the trauma of what they witnessed. No child should ever have to endure such pain. No parent should ever have to face such an unimaginable loss.
In the face of such heartbreak, we are reminded of the fragility of life and the importance of holding our loved ones close. We are reminded to cherish every moment, to speak words of love freely, and to stand together in times of grief and healing.
As we remember Juan, we do not only mourn the life that was lost—we honor the light that he brought into this world. That light, though taken too soon, will never truly fade. It lives on in the memories shared, in the love held tightly by his family, and in the hearts of a community that will never forget him.
Juan “Wan Wan” may no longer walk among us, but his spirit endures—in every smile he inspired, in every life he touched, and in every memory that refuses to fade.
May he rest in peace.
May his family find strength in love.
And may we, as a community, come together to ensure that his life—and his light—are never forgotten.
